Senior Copywriter | Creative Director | Producer
"It's our love of learning that enables us to understand quickly and write clearly about
so many different types of businesses."
Terry Smith has done a lot of things over the past thirty years, but doing the expected isn’t one of them.
A veteran writer and all-around marketing whiz, Terry’s written in every medium for just about every industry you can think of—from the shortest of the short (greeting cards, billboards, songs, print ads, radio and television spots)—to long and complex projects, like video scripts, magazine articles, eBooks, and more.
Terry’s other talent is creative direction. He’s successfully directed projects ranging from greeting cards to musical albums to video shoots to
everything in between. Many creative partners and employees have praised Terry’s unique vision and tireless “unflappability” (and ability to make up groanworthy puns on the spot). And when you hear that description time and again from writers, designers, illustrators, cartoonists, musicians, actors, printers…well, you know he's doing something right.
Terry began his career as a copywriter in the South Bend, Indiana area.
His clients included Martin’s Super Markets, Public Works Magazine and
The University of Notre Dame.
In 2000, Hallmark Cards hired Terry as a greeting card writer, where he wrote for product lines such as Shoebox, Fresh Ink, Maxine, Between You and Me, and more. Two of his cards are still among the highest-rated in the history of the company.
In 2003, he moved to Hallmark Loyalty—a marketing agency within Hallmark that helped outside brands build more loyal relationships with their consumers. He was responsible for creating marketing materials for Fortune 1000 brands including iTunes, Busch Gardens, Sea World, State Farm, Saks Fifth Avenue, QVC, and more.
From Hallmark Loyalty, Terry moved to the Hallmark Marketing Studio, where he directed writers in the creation of marketing materials targeted to Hallmark Gold Crown's database of 14 million consumers.
In 2008, Terry left Hallmark and opened what has evolved into Smith Bender. His work has taken him to Africa several times, where he has used his skills to assist businesses and organizations focused on bringing economic and agricultural growth to developing countries.

Terry’s fun cocktail party icebreaker:
Before signing on at Hallmark he was a professional drummer. He toured with Davy Jones of the Monkees, and also played with
